SUMMARY:Writing in Quantitative and Qualitative Methodologies in the Social Sciences - An Advanced Approach for  Doctoral Students and Researchers
DESCRIPTION:This workshop aims to equip PhD students and researchers with the skills to write clear\, rigorous and critically grounded methodological sections in social science research. \n  \n\nGENERAL INFORMATIONS:\nIt will be held online on: \n\nJanuary 28th\, from 2pm to 5:30pm \n& January 29th\, from 9am to 1pm.\n\nThe session will be conducted in english. \n  \nRegistrations are open until January 26th. \n\nCIIMAR: free\nStandard: 150€ (CCMAR & IPMA have a 50% discount)\n\n  \nNOTE: The attendance certificate will be issued if the trainee attends at least 80% of the total course time. \nIf tickets are sold out\, you can sign up for the waiting list (you will be notified in order of registration). \n  \n\nDESCRIPTION:\nThis session aims to help strengthen scientific writing skills in the social sciences by addressing specific needs identified in the context of doctoral studies and research (regarding performance and well-being). Its integrated learning approach ensures a direct impact on the participants’ scholarly output and on the overall quality of the research conducted. \n  \nObjectives: \n\nDeepen understanding of the role of methodology in the scientific validation of research;\nDevelop skills in writing quantitative and qualitative methodologies;\nStrengthen the ability to justify methodological choices in a critical and transparent manner;\nImprove the integration of research questions\, methods\, and analytical strategies;\nPromote text revision practices and critical peer feedback;\n\n  \nAgenda: \n\nOverview of Methodological Writing (2h)\n\nThe role and expectations of the methodology section in scientific texts; Consistency between research design\, methods\, and writing; Descriptive\, justificatory\, and reflective writing; Ethical issues\, limitations\, and methodological rigor\nActivity: Critical analysis of methodological excerpts\n\n\nWriting Quantitative Methodologies (1h30)\n\nDescription of samples\, variables\, and instruments; Writing data collection and analysis procedures; Justification of statistical and technical choices; Common errors and improvement strategies\nActivity: guided review of quantitative excerpts and writing session using the structured review method\n\n\nWriting qualitative methodologies (1h30)\n\nDescription of fieldwork and research processes; Writing about sampling and selection criteria; Positioning and qualitative rigor; Transparency and validity in qualitative writing (practical example)\nActivity: production of a methodological excerpt based on a research scenario\n\n\nMethodological integration and final session (2h30)\n\nWriting in mixed-methods studies; Organization and structure of the methodology section; Strategies for clarity and academic style; Collaborative writing session on participants’ texts\nActivity: collective review and peer feedback\n\n\n\n  \nTrainer: Joana Pais Zózimo \n\n\n\n\n\nJoana is a Portuguese social scientist and scholar of international standing with extensive global networks. Her experience in academic writing led to her profound interest in healthier approaches to writing when supporting her peers\, both in lectures\, writing groups and through online training for doctoral researchers. She holds a PhD in Educational Research and a professional qualification to deliver online and residential academic writing retreats.
