SUMMARY:Statistical Models with R for Biological Sciences
DESCRIPTION:30 hours course \nThe course’s first session is a reminder of linear regression and analysis of variance\, the two statistical techniques that constitute the basis of the most important frames of statistical models. These statistical models (GLM\, GLZ and GAM) will be the content of the next four sessions. \nGLM (General Linear Model) will be studied in the second and third sessions. Due to its robustness and relative simplicity\, this is the most widely used statistical model frame. For this reason\, in the course we spend more time with GLM than with the others modelling frameworks (GLZ\, GAM). Through worked examples will be explained the following topics: I) GLM assumptions\, how to test them and how to solve problems when certain of these assumptions are not met (data transformation for non-normality\, alternative fitting by generalized least squares for variance heteroscedasticity and residual autocorrelation); II) contrast of hypothesis for the main effects and post-hoc tests for the simple effects; III) visualization of model predictions. \nIn the GLM will be explained with particular detail the inclusion of random factors (simple mixed effects models\, hierarchical designs\, and random slopes designs). \nGLZ (Generalized Linear Models) are an extension of GLM for error distributions that could be different than Gaussian. Three worked examples will be shown for different distributions (binomial Poisson and negative binomial\, for over-dispersed data)\, and a simple example including random factors. \nGAM is a statistical model frame that could incorporate any features of GLM and GLZ. But\, in addition\, and considering additional restrictions\, they could incorporate smoothed functions (non-linear but non-parametric) to describe the relationship between the response variable and one or several predictor variables. This statistical model frame has been gaining popularity in different fields of science due to the increase in computer power over the last 20 years. \nAt least a beginner’s level in R language is recommended for this course\, and also some familiarity with basic statistical techniques (regression\, contrast of hypothesis\, ANOVA). \nThe course is open to any level from undergraduate students to senior researchers. It is considered as the “second part” of another course that is regularly taught in CIIMAR entitled Introductory Statistics for Biological Sciences. \nGOALS/SKILLS: \n– Understand the principles of the statistical model frames in order to apply them according to the features of data. \n– Test model assumptions with contrast of hypothesis and diagnosis graphs\, and learn to solve problems associated with this process (data transformation\, alternative fitting techniques\, alternative error distributions\, using non-linear or non-parametric fits). \n– Understand the difference between random and fixed factors and the possible ways to incorporate random factors in the model design. \n– Learn about the different contrast of hypothesis that can be performed in a statistical model (analysis of variance and analysis of deviance for the main effects\, Tukey\, Dunnett\, least significant differences\, etc. for the post-hoc). \n– Learn the most standard methods to select the best model among a series of candidates fit to the same data. \n  \nPrerequisites: Basic knowledge of R and statistics \n  \nINSTRUCTOR \nAldo Barreiro Felpeto is a researcher at Centro Interdisciplinar de Investigação Marinha e Ambiental (CIIMAR) associated to the University of Porto (Porto\, Portugal). His research career has focused in plankton ecology. He defended his Ph.D. dissertation in 2007 in the Department of Ecology at the University of Vigo (Vigo\, Spain) about interactions between zooplankton and toxic phytoplankton species from the Spanish NW Atlantic coast\, southern Baltic sea and southern Tirreno coast. In 2008-2010\, he performed a post-doctorate in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at Cornell University (Ithaca\, New York\, USA). Since 2011 he is a researcher at CIIMAR.

SUMMARY:Habitat mapping and modelling
DESCRIPTION:DESCRIPTION \nSurveys of the marine environment need to be converted into data products that are useful for marine management. One such product is the “biotope” map – a map of the environment categorised into areas with similar community and environmental conditions (or “habitats”). Such maps can show which biotopes are rare\, inform understanding of ecosystem functions\, and generally inform knowledge-based sustainable management for industrial development and conservation. \nThis three day workshop will give you a broad background in the concepts and methods behind generating biotope maps\, and will walk you through an example workflow based on methods currently being used by MAREANO\, Norway’s national seabed mapping programme. \nYou will learn cluster analysis techniques for biotope classification\, random forest modelling techniques for predictive mapping (and potentially others if time allows)\, and evaluation methods for assessing your predictions and communicating uncertainty. \nYou can be a complete beginner at modelling methods to take this course\, but all analyses will be performed in the R software environment (with R studio)\, so a basic level of R coding knowledge is necessary to make the most of this course. Scripts and data will be provided. \nIt will be held in English. \nOrganized by CIIMAR and IMR (Norway\, https://www.hi.no/en)\, in scope of the TwinDEEPS (a Horizon Europe project\, funded in scope of the Widening programme (Grant Agreement no. 101160298). \nTRAINERS \nDr Rebecca Ross (https://www.hi.no/en/hi/about-us/employees/rebecca-ross) \nRebecca is a deep-sea benthic ecologist and modeller. Her career is generally focussed on applied marine ecology – producing scientific results that support sustainable evidence-based marine management. This includes experience in deep-sea survey and analytical methods development\, video analyses\, species/habitat distribution modelling\, larval dispersal modelling\, biotope classification\, and vulnerable marine ecosystem definition. \nShe is currently a researcher at the Institute of Marine Research in Bergen\, Norway and working primarily on the Norwegian national mapping project\, MAREANO. \nDr Jonatan Fredricson Marquez (https://www.hi.no/en/hi/about-us/employees/jonatan-fredricson-marquez) \nJonatan is a marine biologist who specializes in spatial analyses and mapping. His current work focuses on developing different types of maps of the marine benthos to aid management and conservation strategies\, such as maps of habitat\, biotopes\, or other management units. He is familiar with a range of mapping techniques from regressive and multivariate models to machine learning models. \nHe currently works as a researcher in the benthic communities research group at the Norwegian Institute of Marine Research where he is involved in the MAREANO project\, as well as other projects related to nature accounting\, natur-i-norge\, and regional benthic mapping. \nPREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE \nMust have some working knowledge of R software environment. \nMORE INFORMATION AND REGISTRATION\n\nA maximum of 20 participants will be selected for the workshop\, considering their motivation and the potential impact of the workshop in their careers.\nThe registration deadline is October 31\, 2025.\nIf you have any doubts please contact: twindeeps@ciimar.up.pt

SUMMARY:Scientific Writing Retreat Online: WritingLab session 3
DESCRIPTION:WHAT IS ESCRITALAB? \nThis is a structured initiative in the format of a writing retreat\, providing a focused and motivating environment for academic production. The goal is to offer a space\nfree from distractions\, where participants can focus exclusively on writing\,\nwhile benefiting from the support of an academic community.\nWriting retreats have been widely used in academic contexts to\npromote productivity and reduce anxiety associated with the writing process. Studies\nshow that academic writing can be a lonely and challenging process\, making\ncollective support an important factor for researchers’ progress and well-being (cf.\nBeasy et al.\, 2020; Grant\, 2006).\nThe event is specifically designed for doctoral students and junior researchers\,\nbut is open to anyone interested in participating. \nWHAT TO EXPECT FROM THE EVENT \nCreation of a dedicated writing space\, without interruptions or daily distractions.\n• Increased productivity through structured focus techniques.\n• Peer support and motivation\, promoting a collective and collaborative learning experience.\n• Reduction of anxiety and writer’s block by setting realistic and measurable goals.\n• Development of regular writing habits that can be maintained after the event. \nPROPOSAL \nThe event is structured by combining Rowena Murray’s ‘typing pool’ model with the Pomodoro technique\, providing a dynamic and productive environment for writing (Murray and Newton\, 2009). The EscritaLab will be divided into three online sessions. Participation is flexible\, allowing each participant to choose between one\, two\, or all three sessions.\nIn addition\, each participant defines their objectives in advance for each session. For example\, if you are preparing an article for submission\, you could organize yourself as follows:\nSession 1 – Write the methodology and results section.\nSession 2 – Develop the discussion and critical analysis.\nSession 3 – Work on the introduction and abstract. \nAnother possible approach is to dedicate each session to different tasks\, such as:\nSession 1 – Write a grant application.\nSession 2 – Write a policy brief.\nSession 3 – Prepare a conference submission. \nEach session will be held in a single morning and will follow the following structure:\n9:30 – 10:00 | Presentation and individual goal setting.\n10:00 – 11:00 | Focused writing session (using the Pomodoro method).\n11:00 – 11:15 | Break and informal discussion.\n11:15 – 12:45 | Focused writing session.\n12:45 – 13:00 | Reflection on progress and planning for next steps. \nREFERENCES \nBeasy\, K.\, Emery\, S.\, & Coleman\, B. SUMMARY:AI Training: From Advanced Prompting to Custom GPT Creation
DESCRIPTION:Interactive 3-Hour Session \nBuilding on the success of our previous training—where we explored how to maximize ChatGPT’s potential and break down complex activities into logical\, AI-friendly tasks—this session takes you a step further. \nWe will briefly recap key concepts for new participants and then focus on thinking and acting like an AI architect. You will learn how to master meta prompting\, design 3D and structured prompts\, and package them into Custom GPTs for faster\, more reliable\, and scalable results. \nYou will leave with ready-to-use prompt frameworks\, live demonstrations\, and practical use cases\, along with a clear understanding of how to start building your own GPTs tailored to your research or project needs. \nKey Takeaways \nRefresher: breaking down activities into AI-ready task flows (great for newcomers and as a warm-up for advanced work) Mastering meta prompting – guiding AI thinking rather than simply asking questions Applying the 3D prompting framework to move from simple to complex\, multi-layered outputs Crafting structured prompts for consistency and reproducibility Demonstrations and real-life use cases showing how advanced prompts improve results Introduction to Custom GPT creation: from idea to practical mini GPT Blueprint for building a reusable prompt and GPT library \nFormat & Requirements \n\nDuration: 3 hours (interactive\, hands-on\, timing is to be specified)\nParticipants: researchers\, project managers\, and support staff (just CIIMAR members)\nRequirements: Laptop; ChatGPT Plus recommended (not mandatory)\n\nTrainer \nKristjan Zemljič is an AI trainer for researchers\, project managers and entrepreneurs. He trained over 1600 professionals on AI and is mentoring top scientific teams across the EU (mostly from R&D centres\, universities\, technology transfer centers\, etc). As a grant writer\, he specialized in deep tech\, tech and education solutions\, collecting +€45M for his clients. He developed on-demand training on AI (acquired by 200 teams)\, several AI apps (+1000 downloads\, 65 countries). He holds 3 international certificates in project management and has +20 years of working experience. Currently\, his organization is a project partner in 2 on-going EU projects.
