Ana holds a BSc in Aquatic Sciences from University of Porto (2001)\, and PhD in Ocean and Earth Science from Southampton University (2005). Her research focuses on 3 topics in deep-sea biology: 1) biodiversity and biogeography of chemosynthetic ecosystems\, 2) reproductive ecology of invertebrates and 3) population connectivity and its implications for conservation and biogeography. Ana has contributed to the policy process by authoring and reviewing the UN Assessment of the State of the Marine Environment and has worked with Portuguese Ministry of the Sea in the design of a national network of MPAs. Currently she co-leads the working groups “Population Connectivity” in INDEEP (International network for scientific investigation of deep-sea ecosystems) and “Decade for Deep-Ocean Science” in DOSI (Deep-Ocean Stewardship Initiative). Ana has participated in 23 oceanographic cruises dedicated to the study of deep-sea ecosystems and has a vast experience in seafloor sampling and in situ experimentation. \nAna Sofia Lavrador\, CIIMAR \nAna Sofia Lavrador holds a PhD in Molecular and Environmental Biology from the University of Minho and is currently a junior researcher at CIIMAR\, working in the field of deep-sea biodiversity and conservation. Her research focuses on the use of environmental DNA (eDNA)\, DNA metabarcoding\, and bioinformatic workflows to support biodiversity monitoring and marine conservation. During her PhD\, she investigated the application of DNA metabarcoding for the early detection and monitoring of marine non-indigenous species in Portuguese coastal systems. She is now involved in the BioProtect project\, where she works on eDNA-based approaches for detecting and monitoring deep-sea Vulnerable Marine Ecosystem indicator taxa\, particularly corals and sponges. Her current work integrates field sampling strategies\, molecular methods\, reference database assessment\, and reproducible bioinformatics to improve the use of eDNA as a tool for deep-sea ecosystem monitoring and management. \nEmil de Borger\, NIOZ \nEmil De Borger obtained a masters degree in Marine Biology – Conservation Biology and Ecosystem Management at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel\, Antwerp University\, and Ghent University. He completed his PhD at Ghent University and the Royal Netherlands Institute of Sea Research (NIOZ\, Yerseke)\, with a dissertation entitled “Human and natural impacts on North Sea sediment biogeochemistry”. Afterwards he was a postdoc at the NIOZ\, and later at Ghent University\, studying energy flows surrounding offshore wind farms\, and benthic pelagic coupling in polar ecosystems. He is currently a tenure track scientist at the NIOZ\, to develop research on seafloor biogeochemistry in diverse settings. \nFuru Mienis\, NIOZ \nDr. Furu Mienis works in the department of Ocean Systems at the NIOZ Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research. Her area of specialization is sedimentology and environmental analysis and her research focuses on understanding processes occurring at the sediment-water interface following a multidisciplinary process-based approach with the main goal to ultimately define their influence on sediment transport and deep-sea ecological hotspots. In parallel to her more fundamental research\, Furu Mienis works on the technical development of deep-sea landers\, which resulted in several new observational and autonomous sampling tools. \nHelena Vieira\, University of Aveiro \nIrene Martins\, CIIMAR  \nIrene Martins holds a PhD in Ecology and specialises in Coastal Ecology and Marine Ecosystem Modelling. She leads the Marine Ecosystem Modelling team at CIIMAR (University of Porto\, Portugal)\, where she coordinates research on the development and application of numerical models to assess the impacts of multiple stressors—such as climate change\, pollutants\, plastics\, and invasive species—on coastal and marine ecosystems. Her team focuses on food web models to support the analysis of the structure and functioning of marine social-ecological systems. She teaches and organises courses in ecological modelling\, programming languages\, and complex system dynamics. She is a member of the ICES expert group (WGENGAGE)\, which aims at bridging the gap between scientists and stakeholders. \nJacinto Cunha\, CIIMAR  \nJacinto Cunha is an interdisciplinary ecologist working at the interface of ecological theory\, ecosystem services science\, and geospatial modelling in marine and coastal socio-ecological systems. His research focuses on understanding how ecosystem structure and functioning sustain ecosystem services\, and how climate change and human pressures affect their supply and resilience. He specialises in developing spatially explicit\, data-driven approaches and modelling frameworks to support evidence-based ecosystem management and planning\, and sustainable coastal and marine governance. \nJoana Xavier\, CIIMAR  \nJoana Xavier is an Assistant Researcher and leader of the Deep-Sea Biodiversity and Conservation Research Team (DEEP) at CIIMAR – University of Porto (Portugal)\, and an invited Associate Professor in Deep-Sea Biology at the Department of Biological Sciences of the University of Bergen (Norway). Her research focuses on the understanding of basin-scale diversity\, biogeographic\, and connectivity patterns of deep-sea vulnerable marine species and habitats (e.g. sponge grounds\, cold-water coral gardens)\, using a combination of disciplines (taxonomy\, systematics\, ecology and genetics)\, and exploration and sampling tools (remotely operated vehicles\, towed cameras). I also strive to advance the science-policy-society interface\, working with local communities to integrate their knowledge and perceptions on marine biodiversity into decision-making; as well as developing tools and transferring knowledge to support the implementation of agreements and instruments for sustainable management\, conservation\, and restoration of deep-sea habitats. \nMarcel van der Meer\, NIOZ  \nMarcel van der Meer studies the salt content\, salinity\, in seas and oceans in the past to better understand future climate developments. Salt can help us to reconstruct ocean circulations in the past. The large global ocean circulation distributes heat across the earth. If the ice caps melt as a result of global warming causing the uppermost water layer of the North Atlantic Ocean to become less saline\, then that could slow the warm Gulf Stream. This could potentially lead to colder conditions in Western Europe. I conduct my work primarily by measuring deuterium\, a rare form of hydrogen\, in molecular fossils of algae. \nSandra Ramos\, CIIMAR \nSandra Ramos is a PhD researcher and team leader of the Fish Ecology and Sustainability Team at CIIMAR-UP. Her primary research area is marine ecology\, impact of. anthropogenic pressures on ecosystems and on their capacity to deliver services and societal benefits. She has experience in local assessments of provisioning\, regulation and maintenance\, and cultural ecosystem services provided by marine ecosystems. She applies multidisciplinary and participatory approaches\, integrating stakeholder knowledge into scientific research to enhance environmental management and decision-making. She is also a member of the ICES expert group (WGRMES)\, where she collaborates with various international experts on Ecosystem services.

SUMMARY:From Question to Measure: Designing a Good Questionnaire
DESCRIPTION:Questionnaires are among the most widely used data collection tools in scientific research. However\, their apparent simplicity conceals a set of methodological decisions which\, when not properly grounded\, can compromise the validity and reliability of the data collected and\, consequently\, the conclusions of the research.   \nThis training adopts a strongly practical orientation: it starts from the most common errors observed in questionnaire design in research settings and\, through group-based exercises\, develops the skills required to produce rigorous\, clear\, and study-appropriate measurement instruments. \n  \n\nGENERAL INFORMATION:\nThis workshop will be a two-day event\, taking place on May 18 and 21\, at IPMA\, Matosinhos\, from 9:30am to 1pm. \nThe sessions can be held in portuguese or english\, depending on the preferences indicated in the registration. \n  \nRegistrations are open until May 15. \n\nCIIMAR & IPMA members: free\nStandard: 100€ (CCMAR members have a 50% discount)\n\n  \nNOTE: The attendance certificate will be issued if the trainee attends at least 80% of the total course time. \nIf tickets are sold out\, you can sign up for the waiting list through this link (you will be notified in order of registration). \n  \n\nDESCRIPTION:\nBy the end of the training\, participants will be able to: \n\nIdentify the principles that distinguish a well-designed questionnaire from a problematic one; \nSelect the appropriate scale type and response format for different variables and research objectives; \nFormulate clear\, unambiguous items free from wording bias; \nStructure and order a questionnaire to minimise context effects and respondent fatigue; \nCritically review questionnaires produced by others (and by themselves)\, identifying areas for improvement; \nApply these principles to develop a questionnaire tailored to their own field of research.\n\n  \n Programme: \n1st day (May 18th) \n\nFoundations\n\nWhat is a good questionnaire?;\nTypes of variables and measurement scales. Common research errors;\n\n\nItem Construction\n\nWriting clear and valid items;\nWording and response biases;\nQuestionnaire structure and format.\n\n\n\n2nd day (May 21st) \n\nPractical Exercise (I)\n\nGroup work: participants design a mini-questionnaire relevant to their field;\nCritical analysis;\n\n\nPractical Exercise (II)\n\nPeer review of questionnaires;\nGuided discussion: what to improve and why;\n\n\nClosing Session\n\nKey principles summary;\nRecommended resources.\n\n\n\n  \nTrainer: Virgínia da Conceição \nVirgínia is a clinical and health psychologist and researcher at the Health Policy and Systems Lab of the Institute of Public Health of the University of Porto (ISPUP – EpiUnit/ITR). She holds a PhD in Public Health from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto and is the Principal Investigator of the BRIDGE-MH project (2024.15502.PEX)\, which focuses on the evaluation of mental health promotion programmes in higher education.  \n

SUMMARY:Multivariate Statistics with R for Biological Sciences
DESCRIPTION:20 hours course \nThis course will focus on the most useful techniques of multivariate statistical analysis in Biological sciences. These will be principal component analysis\, canonical correspondence analysis\, multidimensional scaling\, discriminant analysis and cluster analysis. Other techniques\, such as correspondence analysis and factor analysis will be approached in a simpler way. Lastly\, some techniques will be approached in a very introductory way\, as it will be the case of canonical correlation\, and redundancy analysis. A brief introduction to parametron and non-parametric techniques for hypothesis contrasts (Hoteling test\, MANOVA\, PERMANOVA) will also be part of the first session. \nAlthough this course uses the R programming language as the basis for the examples and exercises\, which will undoubtedly help the student to become more familiar with it\, learning this language is not an objective of this course. \nGOALS/SKILLS \nThe general aim of the course is to become familiar with the basic concepts of multivariate statistics and to know in detail the main techniques. The methodology to do it consists of exemplified theoretical explanations\, for which the open source programming language R will be used. Students will receive the course lesson material in pdf format\, which contains the theoretical explanations together with worked examples. The examples will also be provided as scripts in R language. In addition\, students will be provided with data files\, which will be used to perform a series of exercises during class hours. These exercises will also be reviewed during class hours. \nPrerequisites: Basic knowledge of R \nINSTRUCTOR \nAldo Barreiro Felpeto is a researcher at Centro Interdisciplinar de Investigação Marinha e Ambiental (CIIMAR) associated to the University of Porto (Porto\, Portugal). SUMMARY:Metagenomic and bioinformatic tools for deep-ocean observation and diversity studies
DESCRIPTION:It will be a four-day event taking place on 5-8 May 2026. \nDESCRIPTION:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn the past couple of decades\, the development of high-throughput sequencing technologies has enhanced our capacity to study biodiversity and ecosystem functioning across multiple habitats. The generation of large amounts of data\, however\, requires specific bioinformatic and statistical tools to contribute to marine ecosystems observation and management. This workshop aims at providing an overview and practical application of current methodologies\, such as eDNA metabarcoding\, metagenomics\, and associated bioinformatic tools to analyze next-generation sequencing data and to make insightful interpretations in the context of marine ecology and biodiversity. There will be a focus on microbial communities\, but the workshop will cover the two major biological groups (prokaryotes and eukaryotes) and it will explore biodiversity concepts that encompass larger organisms as well. This 4-day workshop will comprise keynote lectures by invited speakers as well as theoretical and practical lectures by CIIMAR and external instructors\, and hands-on sessions for the implementation of bioinformatic workflows. We will make use of open-source tools available in R and Python environments for the qualitative and quantitative analysis of large sequence and environmental data. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTarget audience: MSc/PhD students to established researchers\nRequirements: Basic knowledge in programming environments (e.g. R\, Python) is desirable\, but not mandatory.\nLocation: FCUP (Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto)\nRegistration is free for all participants\n\nRegistrations are open until 21 April 2026. \nNOTE: \nA maximum of 25 participants will be selected for the workshop\, considering their motivation and the potential impact of the workshop in their careers. \n\nWorkshop Instructors: \nDr. Catarina Magalhães \nDedicated to understanding how microscopic life shapes natural environments and responds to ecosystem functioning\, from the icy waters of the Arctic and Antarctica to the deep sea and coastal ecosystems. Catarina Magalhães works as a researcher at CIIMAR and teaches at the University of Porto. Catarina also serves on the coordination committee of the Portuguese Polar Program. In her research\, she combines oceanographic expeditions\, laboratory experiments\, and advanced genomic approaches\, such as metagenomics and metatranscriptomics\, to investigate how these invisible communities respond to environmental change. Catarina is actively involved in several national and international marine microbiome monitoring programs\, contributing to global efforts to standardize microbiome research and data sharing. She particularly values collaborative work and the opportunity to bring together multidisciplinary teams to address key challenges in marine science.  \nDr. Miguel Semedo \nMiguel Semedo received his PhD in Marine Sciences from the Virginia Institute of Marine Science\, College of William and Mary (2019)\, and he is currently a junior researcher at CIIMAR and co-PI of the Microbiome Ecology and Biogeochemistry group. As a microbial ecologist\, Miguel is interested in investigating the diversity and function of microbial communities across multiple environments and their roles in biogeochemical processes\, especially the nitrogen cycle. For his research\, he applies molecular\, bioinformatic\, and biogeochemical methodologies to connect the dots between microbial community composition and biological activity. \nDr. Alessandro Vezzi \nAlessandro Vezzi obtained his PhD in Biotechnology from the Department of Biology at the University of Padova\, Italy\, in 2003\, and he is currently a researcher in the same Department. As a molecular biologist\, Alessandro has always focused his research on genome sequencing and analysis of both prokaryotic and eukaryotic organisms\, applying various laboratory protocols and surfing through different sequencing platforms. SUMMARY:Statistical Models with R for Biological Sciences
DESCRIPTION:30 hours course \nThe course’s first session is a reminder of linear regression and analysis of variance\, the two statistical techniques that constitute the basis of the most important frames of statistical models. These statistical models (GLM\, GLZ and GAM) will be the content of the next four sessions. \nGLM (General Linear Model) will be studied in the second and third sessions. Due to its robustness and relative simplicity\, this is the most widely used statistical model frame. For this reason\, in the course we spend more time with GLM than with the others modelling frameworks (GLZ\, GAM). Through worked examples will be explained the following topics: I) GLM assumptions\, how to test them and how to solve problems when certain of these assumptions are not met (data transformation for non-normality\, alternative fitting by generalized least squares for variance heteroscedasticity and residual autocorrelation); II) contrast of hypothesis for the main effects and post-hoc tests for the simple effects; III) visualization of model predictions. \nIn the GLM will be explained with particular detail the inclusion of random factors (simple mixed effects models\, hierarchical designs\, and random slopes designs). \nGLZ (Generalized Linear Models) are an extension of GLM for error distributions that could be different than Gaussian. Three worked examples will be shown for different distributions (binomial Poisson and negative binomial\, for over-dispersed data)\, and a simple example including random factors. \nGAM is a statistical model frame that could incorporate any features of GLM and GLZ. But\, in addition\, and considering additional restrictions\, they could incorporate smoothed functions (non-linear but non-parametric) to describe the relationship between the response variable and one or several predictor variables. This statistical model frame has been gaining popularity in different fields of science due to the increase in computer power over the last 20 years. \nAt least a beginner’s level in R language is recommended for this course\, and also some familiarity with basic statistical techniques (regression\, contrast of hypothesis\, ANOVA). \nThe course is open to any level from undergraduate students to senior researchers. It is considered as the “second part” of another course that is regularly taught in CIIMAR entitled Introductory Statistics for Biological Sciences. \nGOALS/SKILLS: \n– Understand the principles of the statistical model frames in order to apply them according to the features of data. \n– Test model assumptions with contrast of hypothesis and diagnosis graphs\, and learn to solve problems associated with this process (data transformation\, alternative fitting techniques\, alternative error distributions\, using non-linear or non-parametric fits). \n– Understand the difference between random and fixed factors and the possible ways to incorporate random factors in the model design. \n– Learn about the different contrast of hypothesis that can be performed in a statistical model (analysis of variance and analysis of deviance for the main effects\, Tukey\, Dunnett\, least significant differences\, etc. for the post-hoc). \n– Learn the most standard methods to select the best model among a series of candidates fit to the same data. \n  \nPrerequisites: Basic knowledge of R and statistics \n  \nINSTRUCTOR \nAldo Barreiro Felpeto is a researcher at Centro Interdisciplinar de Investigação Marinha e Ambiental (CIIMAR) associated to the University of Porto (Porto\, Portugal). His research career has focused in plankton ecology. He defended his Ph.D. dissertation in 2007 in the Department of Ecology at the University of Vigo (Vigo\, Spain) about interactions between zooplankton and toxic phytoplankton species from the Spanish NW Atlantic coast\, southern Baltic sea and southern Tirreno coast. In 2008-2010\, he performed a post-doctorate in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at Cornell University (Ithaca\, New York\, USA). Since 2011 he is a researcher at CIIMAR.

SUMMARY:Primeiros Socorros Psicológicos – da teoria à prática
(EFPA\, SC Disaster\, Crisis and Trauma Psychology). SUMMARY:Primeiros Socorros Psicológicos – da teoria à prática
(EFPA\, SC Disaster\, Crisis and Trauma Psychology).
